In a bustling home where everyone seems to march to the beat of their own schedule, ensuring a good night’s sleep can feel like a challenge. Between different routines, late-night snacks, and the ever-present lure of screens, it’s no wonder bedtime sometimes gets overlooked. But in our household, we’ve been working hard to prioritize sleep, and today I want to share our journey, struggles, and some solutions that have started to work for us.
Our Household Bedtime Dynamics
Every family has its quirks, and ours is no exception. Juli prefers early nights and often heads to bed with Fearne, our 6-year-old, who absolutely loves her bedtime routine. She thrives on consistency, and her excitement to get her bed just right each night is adorable and inspiring.
I tend to stay up a little later, aiming for an 11 PM bedtime. However, I’ll admit the lead-up to launching the Home Harmony Project turned my routine upside down. Burning the midnight oil until 1 AM became a habit, leaving me feeling drained and out of sync.
The real bedtime chaos, though, comes from our teenagers. Late-night snacks and gaming sessions are their favorite pastimes, even when we try to encourage healthier habits. While it’s a work in progress, we’ve made strides in creating boundaries—like turning off the internet when I head to bed—to help them wind down and understand the importance of proper sleep.
Steps We’re Taking to Improve Sleep Routines

Here are some strategies that have helped us work toward better sleep habits in our busy household:
1️⃣ Set a Realistic Bedtime Goal:
We don’t aim for perfection, but we’ve agreed on reasonable bedtimes for everyone. Juli and Fearne enjoy their early nights, while I focus on keeping my bedtime consistent at 11 PM.
2️⃣ Limit Screen Time Before Bed:
Switching off the internet at night has been one of our most effective tactics for encouraging the teenagers to transition into bedtime mode. It’s not their favorite rule, but it’s making a difference.
3️⃣ Create a Relaxing Atmosphere:
We’ve worked on making the bedrooms inviting for sleep—dim lighting, cozy bedding, and quiet surroundings. Fearne’s excitement about her room proves how much a pleasant environment helps.
4️⃣ Practice Patience and Persistence:
Building new habits takes time, and we’re learning to be patient. Whether it’s breaking the late-night snacking habit or sticking to a bedtime routine, we remind ourselves (and each other) that consistency will pay off.
Finding What Works for Your Family
Every family’s dynamic is unique, and the key is to find strategies that work for your household. Whether it’s creating a calming bedtime ritual, setting boundaries for screen time, or simply agreeing on a consistent schedule, the goal is to make sleep a priority.
