5 People, 5 Beds: How We Encourage the Habit at Home

A wide shot of a cozy, neatly made bed in a family home

If you’ve ever felt like getting everyone in the house on the same page about tidying up is a mission, trust me—you’re not alone! With five people in our home, making the beds each morning might seem like a small thing, but it’s a cornerstone of how we start our day with intention and positivity. It’s not always perfect (and there’s definitely some shouting up the stairs involved), but it works for us. Here’s how we’ve turned bed-making into a family routine and why it’s such an important part of our day.

Creating a Routine for Everyone

Mornings can be a whirlwind, especially in a house with three busy kids and two adults. Our approach to bed-making is simple: everyone has their role to play. On the top floor, the boys are responsible for their own beds. Juli often takes the role of “reminder-in-chief,” calling up the stairs, “Don’t forget your beds!” They might roll their eyes, but more often than not, they get it done.

Downstairs, I take care of making our bed and helping Fearne with hers. At just six years old, she absolutely loves making her bed look pristine. Whether it’s carefully placing her stuffed animals or straightening her duvet, she’s proud of her work—and that pride is contagious.

Why We Do It

Bed-making isn’t just about appearances. It’s about starting the day with a win. For the kids, it’s a small but powerful habit that reinforces responsibility. For Juli and me, it’s a moment of calm amidst the morning chaos—a way to set the tone for a productive day ahead.

There’s also something special about climbing into a neatly made bed at the end of the day. It reminds us that no matter how hectic life gets, we’ve created a space that’s orderly and welcoming.

Encouraging the Habit in a Busy Household

If you’re trying to get your household into a bed-making routine, here are a few tips that have worked for us:

  1. Make It Easy: Keep bedding simple and manageable for kids to straighten themselves.
  2. Offer Encouragement: Praise their efforts and let them know their contributions matter.
  3. Lead by Example: Kids mimic what they see, so make your bed a priority too.
  4. Add a Fun Element: Fearne loves choosing her favorite stuffed animals to display—small touches can make it enjoyable!
