Eco-Friendly Tips for Fresh Laundry
Keeping your washing machine clean not only keeps clothes fresh but also extends the machine’s life. Natural cleaning products can be just as effective as store-bought cleaners, without harsh chemicals. Here’s how to deep-clean your washing machine using safe, eco-friendly ingredients.
Materials Needed:
- White vinegar – for removing buildup and odors
- Baking soda – acts as a gentle scrubber and deodorizer
- Lemon essential oil (optional) – adds a fresh scent and has natural antibacterial properties
- Microfiber cloth – for wiping down exterior surfaces
Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide
1. Clean the Detergent Dispenser
- Remove the detergent dispenser, rinse it under warm water, and scrub away any detergent buildup with a cloth or brush dipped in white vinegar.
- Dry the dispenser and place it back in the machine.
2. Add Vinegar and Baking Soda for a Deep Clean
- Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the detergent dispenser.
- Sprinkle half a cup of baking soda directly into the drum.
- Run the machine on its hottest, longest cycle while empty. The combination of vinegar and baking soda will break down detergent residues, mildew, and odors, all in one wash.
3. Wipe Down the Drum and Door
- After the cycle finishes, dampen a cloth with a mix of water and a few drops of lemon essential oil. Use it to wipe down the drum, door, and rubber seal, which can trap moisture and debris.
- Focus on the door seal, gently scrubbing any black mold spots with vinegar if needed.
4. Clean the Exterior
- For a sparkling exterior, use a solution of equal parts vinegar and water. Dip a cloth into the solution and wipe down all surfaces, including the control panel and knobs.
Maintenance Tips:
- Leave the door open between washes to let the drum air out.
- Repeat this eco-friendly deep clean once a month to keep your machine fresh and efficient. Although the wash cycle may take a few hours to complete, the actual time you need to spend cleaning it is around 10-15 minutes.
- Use lemon essential oil sparingly to avoid buildup over time.
